Recycle your heart

The Craftzine card contest for Valentine’s Day

Yesterday, here on the blog we posted these photos of the Valentine’s Day card we’ve made to participate on the Craftzine contest: “Recycle Your Heart”. The basic rule was to make a Valentine card using recycled materials.

As you probably noticed by now, here on Atelier LJ, we love reusing and recycling. So, it was very fun and exciting to participate on this project. You can see all the participations here. There are some amazing ideas there. I’m particularly fond of iHanna’s Valentine card made from a sardine can!

Our card was made from the following materials:

  • two milk cartons glued together (used for the card itself);
  • a red fabric ribbon received wrapping a gift (used for the little red hearts);
  • a red nylon net bag that came wrapping a toy (used on the bouquet);
  • a black nylon coated wire that came wrapping the cable of some kitchen appliance (used to wrap the bouquet);
  • some transparent nylon coated wires coming on toys’ boxes to hold them still (used to make the silvered flowers on the bouquet);
  • a rest of lace (used on the card edges);
  • a textile flower unused from some old craft project (used to embellish the bouquet wrapping).

The only things that weren’t recycled were the card central red paper, which we stole from our son’s kindergarten materials, the super glue and the strong double- sided adhesive tape.

Here’s a detail on how the red fabric ribbon (collected from a gift wrap) was applied. We used a paper shaper punch to cut the little hearts on the milk cartons and then, with the help of a strong double sided adhesive tape, we glued them together with the red fabric in between and a rest of lace on the edges.

The silvered bouquet standing on the back of the card was made from a nylon net bag, (that came wrapping a toy) and the silvered flowers were created by twisting and making spirals with some nylon coated wires that came holding toys on their boxes. We also used a black nylon coated wire (received wrapping the cable of a new kitchen appliance) to tight the bouquet. So…What do you think? Do you like the results? What about you? Do you make your own cards too? With reused materials? Share your ideas with us…
