Let’s grab our crochet hooks and start crocheting a beautiful jewellery collection

As we promised on our previous posts, within our series “Creating Crocheted Jewellery”, we are going to show you how to start crocheting your first wire necklace. In my case, I’ve learned my crochet basics with my mom. If you too have learned the crochet basics with your grandma, your aunt or your mom, you won’t have any difficulties following our wire crocheted jewellery projects. But not everyone had this luck and, nowadays in such a busy world, most kids and teenagers are deprived from that legacy. So, we are going to start precisely with basic crochet instructions and demonstrations. Our first necklace will be made from basic chain stitch and then, little by little, our projects will become more complex, gradually introducing new stitches and techniques.
Grab your wire and your hook and let’s start!
So, let’s
imagine you’ve decided to try crocheting wire jewellery with us and that you are a complete beginner. You’ve been reading our blog and you prepared your coffee can with the essential tools and supplies as we instructed on our previous posts. You’ve gathered your cutter and plier, your crochet hooks (with 0.75, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50 and 1.75mm) and more important, a bobbin of your favourite colour of 0,2mm enamelled copper wire. Now what? Well, now you’ll start by carefully reading the post “Crochet basics: instructions and video tutoirals to make chain stitch (with yarn and wire)” and watching the video demos we present there. Then, you’ll try doing it yourself.
Avoid undoing wire crochet
A piece of advice: wire crochet isn’t as easy to undo as textile crochet and it tends to break. So, if you have no experience, practice for a while with yarn so you can undo your work more easily and frequently. When you feel confident with thread, you may change to wire. Nevertheless, always avoid undoing your wire crochet, even if, at the beginning, you’re not very happy with the results. Accept this as a part of your learning process: your first wire crocheted jewellery pieces probably won’t be as perfect as you would like. This may happen even if you are a very experienced textile crotchetier!
Test several hooks

So, give time to time and keep on practicing. Gradually, you’ll start seeing some results. First you have to get acquainted with the material you’re using. By touch and by instinct, you’ll learn to manage the wire tension and your hands motion and rhythm. Make some tests with different hook sizes. We all work differently and have different tastes. Two different persons working with the same hook and wire and following the same instructions always get different results. On this post’s second photo, you can see crochet chains resulting from my tests with 0,2mm enamelled copper wire and the hook sizes we advised on this series’ previous post. On the third photo, you can also see a chain made with the same size of hook and wire, but with irregular wire tensioning. I may choose any of them depending on the effect I wish to obtain. So, choose the hook size which works better for you, meaning that you must feel comfortable working with it and you must like the resulting work.
Remember: making jewellery is mostly about style!
Also, don’t forget that creating jewellery involves mostly aesthetical and style issues. It’s not a simple matter of good crochet technique. You may need to adapt the technique to obtain specific results. You may want to explore an unusual hook size for your wire diameter, precisely because you want your chain to be different in some particular way. Or you may want to use an irregular wire tensioning, because you prefer your chain to be asymmetrical and you don’t like regular patterns. You may even want to try using several hook sizes on the same piece to obtain a totally unexpected effect. So, don’t be afraid of trying different and new things. It doesn’t matter if you’re just a beginner. This has nothing to do with technique. While a good, firm technique and regular tensioning may be very important for traditional crochet (depending on what you’re crocheting), it is not so significant when it comes to jewellery creation. The truth is you can do wonders even with the simplest technique, if you’re creative. So, let your creativity go wild! And have fun!
Find your time and pace and enjoy it
Now, you have all you need to start your wire crocheted chain. We are going to let you find your own time and rhythm to do it. It may be when you’re watching television or when you need a quiet and peaceful activity to meditate or enjoy your favorite music. It’s up to you. On our side, along with other craft projects, we will continue this “Creating Crocheted Jewellery” series by posting more crochet basic information and some jewellery examples showing what can be done with the simple chain stitch we’ve been talking about. If you have any doubts or difficulties concerning our instructions and demos, please don’t hesitate to contact us. You may use the blog commenting feature to ask for help if you need to or our Contact Form if you prefer. Don’t be shy. We have a blog because we love to communicate!
